Delving into the Nordic Mythos

This black and grey tattoo design was born from a deep dive into Norse mythology. While I thought I knew the basics—Odin, Yggdrasil, Fenrir, the ravens—I discovered a whole new layer of meaning upon revisiting these ancient tales.

What captivated me most was the profound spiritual journey of Odin. Beyond the iconic names and imagery, I began to understand the underlying philosophy and the subtle ways in which profound concepts were woven into these stories. Odin's quest for wisdom and self-mastery resonated deeply with me, and I was struck by the parallels between his mythological journey and the human experience.

To visually represent this spiritual odyssey, I chose to depict the roots of Yggdrasil as a heart, symbolizing the emotional core of the journey. The highest realm of Yggdrasil is represented by the human brain, signifying the pinnacle of spiritual attainment. This design encapsulates Odin's descent into the underworld and his subsequent ascent to divine wisdom.

By sacrificing his eye to drink from the Well of Urd and enduring the agony of hanging from Yggdrasil, Odin demonstrated his unwavering commitment to knowledge and self-improvement. These acts of self-sacrifice are reflected in the tattoo design, emphasizing the idea that true growth often requires us to step outside of our comfort zones.
